Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom and Natural Hair

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks a pivotal moment in American history—it is now the country’s second officially recognized independence day. This day commemorates the moment in 1865 when news of freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in Texas, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth symbolizes freedom but also celebrates the resilience and enduring spirit of the African American community.
Natural hair is a powerful symbol of freedom and self-expression. When one embraces their natural hair, it can be seen as a celebration of their cultural heritage, identity, and individuality. It may even be a reflection of their journey towards self-acceptance and/or pride in their roots.
At Locsanity, we are dedicated to supporting the loc and natural hair community and honoring our cultural heritage. Our commitment goes beyond haircare to educating our customers and supporting locticians across the nation through our Locsanity Loctician’s Network. As we observe Juneteenth, let us recognize the significance of this day and the empowering role of natural hair in our collective journey toward freedom and self-expression.

Natural Hair as Freedom

Natural hair holds a deep connection to the concept of freedom. For many African Americans, embracing their natural hair is an act of liberation from societal pressures to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards. This choice represents a reclaiming of identity and a celebration of the unique beauty inherent in natural textures.

Choosing to wear natural hair is often more than just a stylistic decision; it may also serve as a powerful statement of self-expression, self-acceptance, or even pride in one’s cultural heritage.

For generations, natural Afro coily hair has been scorned, misunderstood and considered inappropriate in many professional settings. Even today, The C.R.O.W.N. Act is needed to protect against discrimination based on hairstyles such as locs, braids and twists, especially in corporate settings. Many people of African ancestry are demanding the freedom to wear their natural hair in all spaces, whether corporate or social, without fear or retribution.
